LA Sanitation- SAFE Center Report

SAFE Centers are drive-thru, drop-off facilities established throughout the City of Los Angeles that are designed to collect household hazardous  wastes (HHW) and electronic wastes from residents of the City and County of Los Angeles. There are 7 SAFE Centers owned and operated by LA  Sanitation and Environment. HHW represents a multitude of waste types that should not be thrown in residential trash, compost nor recycling bins,  and include materials like paint, medications, automotive products, cleaning products, batteries, pesticides, and syringes. Electronic wastes can  also be dropped off and recycled at a SAFE Center, which include items such as TVs, computers and computer accessories, cables, wires, small  household appliances, and cell phones.

Between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024, SAFE centers collected 9.46 MILLION POUNDS for waste, including 4.9 million pounds of e-waste.

Funding Announcement: Metro Buses to be electrified by 2028

Last week Mayor Bass and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced $80 million of federal funding toward zero-emission buses and charging infrastructure. It is the second largest funding award out of more than 100 projects funded by the federal government. The grant funding provided by the Federal Transit Administration will allow Metro to procure battery-electric buses, charging equipment, and supporting infrastructure to provide reliable zero-emission service along bus routes that operate from Metro’s Bus Division 7 in West Hollywood. These zero-emission buses will replace compressed natural gas buses that have exceeded their useful service life, creating more sustainable transportation options ahead of upcoming international sporting events hosted in Los Angeles.

Proposed Increases to Sewer Rates

LA Sanitation is conducting public outreach efforts to inform communities across Los Angeles about the proposed Sewer Service Charge rate increase.

Please click here to read the one-page handout outlining more information about the proposed changes and details on available cost-saving programs

City of Los Angeles is proposing a rate increase for its Sewer Service Charge (SSC). The funds bring needed updates to the city’s aging sewer system and go specifically toward the management, maintenance, and improvement of that system. Steady rate increases were paused in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Property owners will receive a notice in the mail in early July outlining the need for the proposed rate increase and how they can learn more about providing input at two webinars this summer. Wastewater treatment is among the most critical services LASAN provides to protect public health and the environment.
